Sight
word wars!
We will be
studying 3 sight words a week. I encourage students to make flash cards and
study them at home! Our goal is to be able to recognize all of the sight words
by the end of the year. Attached
is a list of the sight words. We will be going in order starting with list A. We will also be starting spelling tests
soon. Students should be able to recognize these words without sounding them
out, point them out randomly, spell them, and write them. Use the word in a
sentence verbally; write a sentence using the word. Sight words are words that
students should recognize automatically without sounding them out. This makes
reading easier!
Clip Chart
A Behavior Management system
Our classroom is using a clip chart behavior management system to promote positive behavior choices and encourages students to self-monitor their behavior.
How It works
Each student begins the day at the center of the chart labeled “Ready to Learn”
During the course of the day, students have the opportunity to move either up or down the chart according to their behavioral choices – “clip up” or “clip down”.
Positive behavior choices allow the students to move up one level. Inappropriate behavior choices cause them to move down one level.
Rewards/consequences are not issued until the end of the day, when students no longer have the opportunity to move.
If a student makes it to the “top” of the clip chart they become super student and will receive cheers from the class. “Hip hip Hooray, hip hip hooray, Hip Hip Hooray, we have a super student today!” The student will also receive a pink note home about their day!
Clip Chart Advantages
All students are acknowledged for their positive behavior choices.
Students feel a sense of accomplishment when they make good behavior choices and have the opportunity to “clip up”.
Students who have had to “clip down” always have the opportunity to improve and “clip up” later in the day, thus they continue to stay motivated to make positive behavior choices.
Students will record their level/color achieved at the end of the day on a monthly calendar that he/ she will bring home when completed.
